The Simon Cumbers Media Fund workshop for media will be held on 13th April from 10.30am to 1.00pm at the Clarence Hotel in Dublin.
Interested applicants are asked to register first by submitting their contact details to info@simoncumbersmediafund.ie.
The Simon Cumbers Media Fund was established by Irish Aid in memory of Irish journalist Simon Cumbers, who was killed in Saudi Arabia while working with the BBC in 2004. The aim of the Fund is to promote more and better quality coverage of development issues in the Irish media.
Under the Fund, journalists are invited to submit proposals for coverage of a development issue, which will involve travel to a developing country. The deadline for the 2010 summer round of funding is Friday, 7th May. A winter round will be announced in the second half of the year.
Further to the success of Africa Day 2008 and 2009, DHR Communications is once again project managing Irish Aid’s flagship Africa Day events this year. Details of the events are as follows:
1. Africa Day Dublin will take place in the Iveagh Gardens (just off Harcourt Street), Dublin 2 on Sunday, 16th May
2. Africa Day Limerick will take place in the grounds of Limerick City Hall, Merchant’s Quay, Limerick on Sunday, 23rd May
We are currently sourcing volunteers and content-providers to ensure that both of these events are as successful as they have been in previous years.
VOLUNTEERS
We need volunteers in both Dublin and Limerick to assist with setting up the venue and contributing to the smooth running of the event on the day itself. We also need volunteers to assist with distributing promotional materials about Africa Day 2010 in the weeks leading up to the two flagship events. All volunteers will receive full training and support from DHR Communications and Irish Aid.
CONTENT-PROVIDERS
We are currently sourcing content for the African Bazaar section of the event, in which the cultures and customs of various African countries will be celebrated and showcased. In addition to groups that represent African countries, we are also looking for drummers, dancers, singers and groups that can provide educational activities; children’s games and play activities, and any other relevant content.
If you would like to get involved in either – or both – of these flagship Africa Day events, please contact DHR Communications (africaday@dhr.ie / 01-4885808) and we will send you the relevant application form for you to fill out. Please note that only organisations whose application forms have been approved by DHR Communications and Irish Aid will be eligible to participate in the flagship Africa Day events.

Ronnie Whelan’s Rocky Road to Dublin Walking Challenge in Aid of the Myasthenia Gravis Association will launch on Tuesday, 16th March at the Irish Museum of Modern Art at 11:00.
Ronnie will lead the ‘Rocky Road to Dublin’ walking challenge from 29th April to 4th May 2010. To get involved, and to keep informed about the challenge, you can join the Facebook page here or check the MGA’s website.
MG is a muscle weakening disease in which the immune system attacks and damages the nerve signal reception areas. This causes a breakdown between nerves and muscles and results in loss of effectiveness in the muscles of the arms, legs and eyes. The name ‘Myasthenia Gravis’ comes from the Greek and Latin words for ‘grave muscular weakness’.
One in 10,000 people suffer from MG and many more go undiagnosed and misdiagnosed due to a lack of awareness of the condition. In Ireland, there are almost 400 diagnosed sufferers of MG, but it is estimated that for every diagnosed sufferer there are at least two to three others whose condition is undetected.
The 2010 Simon Cumbers Media Fund will be launched in the coming weeks with the unveiling of a new website. To stay updated and for more information on the Simon Cumbers Media Fund you can follow it on Twitter and Facebook.
The Fund is aimed at promoting more and better media coverage of development issues. It was established by Irish Aid in 2005, a little over a year after the tragic death of Irish journalist Simon Cumbers, while he was working for the BBC in Saudi Arabia. The Fund was established by Irish Aid in Simon Cumbers’ memory and in close consultation with the Cumbers Family, who continue to be involved to this day.
Since 2005, the Simon Cumbers Media Fund has increased its profile each year, with over 100 applications received annually. It now has an established reputation amongst the Irish media, and many high-level journalists and media outlets have participated in the Fund in the past.
