Mary Raftery Journalism Fund & The Irish Times launch Bursary and Traineeship in Investigative Journalism
DHR News, Featured | 3rd May 2016

DHR has been working with the Mary Raftery Journalism Fund (MRJF) since 2012. In recent weeks, the Fund, in collaboration with The Irish Times, announced a new Bursary and Traineeship in Investigative Journalism. The Bursary will award a successful applicant an opportunity to undertake a three-month traineeship with The Irish Times where he/she will receive training in investigative journalism as part of a team, as well as producing three original pieces of work to be published by The Irish Times. The three-month traineeship will commence in September 2016.

Check out this short video about the Bursary and Traineeship featuring David Waddell, Chair of the Mary Raftery Journalism Fund and Kevin O’Sullivan, Editor, The Irish Times:

Speaking at the launch of the new Bursary, David Waddell, Chair of the MRJF, said: “We live in an age where ethical professional journalism competes with hearsay and inaccurate reportage. To ensure accountability and to allow citizens secure a full picture, investigative journalism needs to continue to have a fundamental place in society.”

The initiative being launched by the MRJF and The Irish Times offers an opportunity to a developing journalist to carry out detailed and ground-breaking investigations under the guidance of The Irish Times’ senior journalism team. The Bursary and Traineeship is open to students and graduates of all disciplines; however, applicants are required to demonstrate journalistic capacity and their ability to undertake in-depth research by submitting samples of their work with their application forms.

Applicants will be judged on the overall quality of their proposal as well as their capacity to undertake research-based media projects. The potential impact and reach of all proposed projects will also be taken into consideration with preference for projects that can be documented across multiple media platforms.

The deadline for submission of applications is 5pm on Monday, 16th May 2016.

Applications are to be submitted via email to info@maryrafteryfund.ie and the application form can be downloaded here: http://maryrafteryfund.ie/2016-2/.
