National Library to host series of poetry events this autumn

The National Library of Ireland (NLI) has announced that it will host a series of poetry events this autumn. The programme will be headlined by a special celebration to mark ten years of Poetry Aloud, the annual poetry speaking competition for post-primary schools, organised by the NLI in partnership with Poetry Ireland.

The anniversary event will include a talk by Professor Margaret Kelleher of UCD and readings from former winners of the Poetry Aloud competition. It will take place at 6.30pm on Wednesday, 20th September. No booking is required.

Further events range from lectures and exhibition tours to a special evening of poetry and music. All events are free of charge to attend and will take place at the NLI.

  • ‘Harp, Poetry and Pipes: An evening of poetry and music.’ Harpist Kathleen Loughnane will perform newly arranged music from the Patrick O’Neill manuscript collection in the NLI. She will be joined by Cormac Cannon on uileann pipes and Catriona Cannon on harp. Poet Moya Cannon will read a number of poems as part of the performance. Tuesday, 3rd October, 7pm. No booking required.
  • ‘Yeats: The Life and Works of William Butler.’ This special tour of the Library’s Yeats exhibition will provide an introduction to one of the great poets of the twentieth century. The tour will focus on Yeats’ many interests including literature, folklore, theatre, politics, the occult, and Irish cultural identity. Thursday, 5th October and Thursday, 2nd No booking required.
  • ‘Georgie Hyde Lees lecture.’ Professor Margaret Mills Harper, Glucksman Professor in Contemporary Writing in English at University of Limerick, will explore the life of Georgie Hyde Lees on the centenary of her marriage to W.B. Yeats. Tuesday, 17th October, 7pm. No booking required.

Speaking about the programme of poetry events, Brid O’Sullivan of the NLI’s Outreach Department said: “The National Library places great importance on celebrating poetry and we are excited to be hosting a special programme of poetry-related events this autumn.

“We are particularly delighted to be celebrating the tenth anniversary of Poetry Aloud. The competition has been a highlight in our calendar for the past decade. In an age where people spend a significant portion of time engaged in the online world, it is wonderful to see a new generation discovering our country’s rich heritage of poetry through the spoken word.”

The Poetry Aloud 2017 competition is open for applications. Further information about the application process, and about the NLI’s programme of events, is available at: www.nli.ie.
